Macular Degeneration

What You Need to Know

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects your central vision. This condition results from an irreversible buildup of metabolic waste, preventing the retina from receiving the nutrients it needs.

With advanced OCT 3D imaging, this buildup of waste can be detected and tracked properly. Depending on whether the macular degeneration is the dry or wet form, treatment will vary.

Dry Macular Degeneration: This makes up 90% of cases, and tends to progress more slowly. Sunglasses, genetic screening, and antioxidant vitamins are recommended at this stage. Vision loss can result in more advanced stages.

Wet Macular Degeneration: This makes up 10% of cases, and tends to progress quickly and cause more sudden vision loss. Because of bleeding or fluid build-up in the eye, a referral to an ophthalmologist is required for prompt treatment.

In addition to regular follow-ups at the eye doctor, your optometrist will recommend checking your vision at home with an Amsler grid. Any new missing or distorted gridlines could mean a change in your condition, which would need to be addressed.

Who’s at Risk?

Certain factors increase the risk of developing AMD:

  • Family history of AMD
  • Sun damage
  • Age over 50
  • Smokers

  • Dry AMD accounts for the other 90% of cases but rarely results in vision loss.
